Interview

TEMPERANCE (English version - 2016) - Temperance

After two very good albums, Italians are back with a powerful The Earth Embraces Us All. It’s a fact, their fanbase have no other choice but rise as its music will be spread worldwide. In fact, the future can only be shining for Temperance. And as we say in Italy : « chi va piano, va sano e va lontano » !

Temperance and Limitless were really catchy. The Earth Embraces Us All is richer and more complex. Don’t you fear to lose some fans who like direct songs ?
Luca : Hi guys, its' beautiful to stay here with you, we are really honored to do this interview.
Anyway, no, we weren't scared to lose our supporters. We tried to do something that we like. We love music, every kind of music, and the most beautiful thing is the approaching to realize new songs mixing all the music we love.

What do you think If I tell you that some songs of The Earth Embraces Us All (“A thousand places”, “At the edge of space”, “Revolution”, “Advice from a caterpillar” or “The restless ride”) reminds me the best ones of the duet Tarja-Marco on Century Child album ?
Century Child is one of the most important album of the last 15 years, I think that it influenced all the music realized after it, this album is a very masterpiece. The vocal approach of Chiara and Marco is a son of this influence, but at the same time when we were recording our vocal tracks we tried to do some original stuff.

Even if I love your speed and heavy songs, one of my favorite ones is “Change the rhyme”. This song is melodic and melancholic such as “Omega point” or “Lie to me” (Secret Sphere). Is it a will from the band to vary tracks to their max, and not give too much similar songs styled ?
I think that every album, every band and every musician that we meet in our life has influenced a little bit our music and our songs. For example Change The Rhyme is a very good ballad, maybe the first one in the history of Temperance, with some AOR influences, and a pop chorus. We tried to compose a song like this for some times and now, we're so excited to have one .

Chiara, how do you feel singing in Italian language (“Maschere”) ?
Chiara : Well, "Maschere" is the first lyric I have ever written in my native language... I have been studying operatic singing for many years now, so singing in Italian is nothing new for me, but this time is a completely different experience, because I don't use my operatic vocals in "Maschere", but I use my pop/rock vocals in a song with Italian lyrics, and because I am used to write lyrics in english... so it was quite challenging at first to switch language ! But I can say that I am proud of the result !

One album each year. Does that mean you will release a new one in 2017 ?
Luca : It's a secret... If you want to know it, after I must have to kill you ! (laughs)

Why Sandro has left the band ?
Sandro is a part of our family but, unfortunately, he left the band for personal reasons. He's working so hard in his recording studio, so he had no time to travel and play a lot with Temperance.

Marco, have you ask some advices to Michele (Luppi) about your voice ?
Marco : Everytime when I shared the stage with Michele, we talked about the voice and a lof of different musical ways. It’s so great cause day after day, I can improve a lot of things and try to realize some new ideas about vocals, choirs and music too.

Chiara, you have many ways of singing (clear voice, lyrical or even grunts). What are your favorite female singer ?
Chiara : Yes, as I mentioned before, I originally started with the study of operatic singing, but in the last years I decided to experiment many new styles. Now, I like singing in a rock/pop style and I also do some screams and growls on stage. There are many singers that I really like… My first love was Tarja Turunen, and I still love her operatic vocal style. Another singer who has influenced my musical tastes is Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation). She sounds like an angel in high notes ! Then, I have to mention Floor Jansen (Nightwish) : it is absolutely unbelievable how precise and versatile she is ! She's perfect in any vocal style. There are also some Italian singers that I really love, for example I like Elisa Toffoli and Annalisa Scarrone very much. They don't sing metal songs, but they absolutely rock !

Chiara, what do you think if someone calls Temperance as a “female fronted metal band” ? (even if Marco sings a lot in this new album)
As a band, we don't mind being classified in a precise musical style, but we like to experiment a lot. So if my vocals are 100% required for a song, we just use it, if we want to create a different mood and use both the female and male vocal we just do it !

After the tour with Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody, what was your feelings about the French audience and the gigs in themselves ?
Luca : When we played in France during the European tour with LT'S Rhapsody, we found a very good crowd ; it's amazing because it is totally different from all the countries. We can see that during the show, French people are really focused about the show, they are concentrated to all the details of the music stuff, the songs, the artist on the stage and all about the venue. Sure we can't wait to comeback in France and meet them again.

Do you think an European headlining tour to promote your new album can be possible ?
So, that's a good question, because in this moment we are planning something about 2017. Stay tuned to know the details about it.

Italy and France are some kind of neighbors, about lots of things (weather, people …). How is the metal scene in your country (bands, fans, venues…) ?
There are a lot of amazing bands, and now the Italian audience is more updated about the Italian bands respect some years ago. Anyway, the Italian crowd is one of the best people that we ever meet.

Chiara, do you prefer AC Milan or Inter Milan ?
Chiara : Actually, I am not really into football... But my father really likes Inter, so I have no choice but to answer Inter ! (laughs)

Thanks a lot my friends. Have you some words to say to your French fans (maybe in French language) ?
Luca : Merci beaucoup à bientôt. I'm sure that we'll meet again in the next months and we will have really good times !
